43.

Dear last.fm and many, many more.

44.
I would really like to change my username.

45.
A social service should allow me to update certain personal things. Many people
46. use different emails for different things. Currently I have at least four
47. email-addresses that I use regularly.

48.
Often I want people to be able to find me on social sites if they know
49. just one of my digital identities. Yet many sites only allow me to associate
50. one address to my account. - This is just poor programming.

51.
The same goes for usernames. As an example we can look at last.fm.

52.
I created my last.fm account back in the dawn of time (well - a few years ago,
53. I am not the early adopter that I would like to be). My user name is
54. lovepade
55. but it could just as easily be "formerGirlfriend&me". Such a username is just
56. foolish to carry around.

57.
Of course one should choose a good, solid and robust username from the start.
58. But many times people don't. They call themself "skyw4alker" and take geekpride
59. in the esoteric projected qualities of their life and wisdom. But 6 years
60. later they have a high responsibility job and want to project other values.

61.
Or what ever reason they may have to change their social signals.

62.
But the username is set in stone
63. and it's frankly embarrassing.

64.
So please. If you aim to provide a social serve, then let me update me
65. social appearances the same way I might want to update my wardrobe.

66.
As an added incentive: For every extra email adress that people can use to
67. find me, extra users will come to your site. And by making it easy for me to
68. keep my original
69. profile - you get some extra datamining goodness. Goodness that has
70. value, and that disappears if I must create a new profile in order to change
71. my username.

There are comments.
