  35. Overview
  36. .PP
  37. The line printer system supports:
  38. .IP \(bu 3
  39. multiple printers,
  40. .IP \(bu 3
  41. multiple spooling queues,
  42. .IP \(bu 3
  43. both local and remote
  44. printers, and
  45. .IP \(bu 3
  46. printers attached via serial lines that require
  47. line initialization such as the baud rate.
  48. .LP
  49. Raster output devices
  50. such as a Varian or Versatec, and laser printers such as an Imagen,
  51. are also supported by the line printer system.
  52. .PP
  53. The line printer system consists mainly of the
  54. following files and commands:
  55. .DS
  56. .TS
  57. l l.
  58. /etc/printcap printer configuration and capability data base
  59. /usr/lib/lpd line printer daemon, does all the real work
  60. /usr/ucb/lpr program to enter a job in a printer queue
  61. /usr/ucb/lpq spooling queue examination program
  62. /usr/ucb/lprm program to delete jobs from a queue
  63. /etc/lpc program to administer printers and spooling queues
  64. /dev/printer socket on which lpd listens
  65. .TE
  66. .DE
  67. The file /etc/printcap is a master data base describing line
  68. printers directly attached to a machine and, also, printers
  69. accessible across a network. The manual page entry
  70. .IR printcap (5)
  71. provides the authoritative definition of
  72. the format of this data base, as well as
  73. specifying default values for important items
  74. such as the directory in which spooling is performed.
  75. This document introduces some of the
  76. information that may be placed
  77. .IR printcap .
