35. The Text Retrieval Conference (TREC) workshop series encourages
36. research in information retrieval and related applications by
37. providing a large test collection, uniform scoring procedures,
38. and a forum for organizations interested in comparing their
39. results. Now in its twentieth year, the conference has become
40. the major experimental effort in the field. Participants in
41. the previous TREC conferences have examined a wide variety
42. of retrieval techniques and retrieval environments,
43. including cross-language retrieval, retrieval of web documents,
44. multimedia retrieval, and question answering. Details about TREC
45. can be found at the TREC web site, http://trec.nist.gov.
46.

47.
You are invited to participate in TREC 2011. TREC 2011 will
48. consist of a set of tasks known as "tracks". Each track focuses
49. on a particular subproblem or variant of the retrieval task as
50. described below. Organizations may choose to participate in any or
51. all of the tracks. Training and test materials are available from
52. NIST for some tracks; other tracks will use special collections that
53. are available from other organizations for a fee.
54.

55.
Dissemination of TREC work and results other than in the (publicly
56. available) conference proceedings is welcomed, but the conditions of
57. participation specifically preclude any advertising claims based
58. on TREC results. All retrieval results submitted to NIST are
59. published in the Proceedings and are archived on the TREC web site.
60. The workshop in November is open only to participating groups that
61. submit retrieval results for at least one track and to selected
62. government invitees.
63.
Schedule:

64. Schedule:
65. As soon as possible -- submit your application to participate in
66. TREC 2011 as described below.
67. Submitting an application will add you to the active participants'
68. mailing list. On Feb 23, NIST will announce a new password
69. for the "active participants" portion of the TREC web site.
70.

71. Beginning March 1
72. Document disks used in some existing TREC collections distributed
73. to participants who have returned the required forms.

88.
Task Description

89. Below is a brief summary of the tasks. Complete descriptions of
90. tasks performed in previous years are included in the Overview
91. papers in each of the TREC proceedings (in the Publications section
92. of the web site).

93. The exact definition of the tasks to be performed in each track for
94. TREC 2011 is still being formulated. Track discussion takes place
95. on the track mailing list. To be added to a track mailing list,
96. follow the instructions for contacting that mailing list as
97. given below. For questions about the track, send mail to the
98. track coordinator (or post the question to the track mailing list
99. once you join).

100. TREC 2011 will contain eight tracks. The Chemical IR,
101. Entity, Legal, Session, and Web tracks will continue from TREC 2010.
102. TREC 2011 will add tracks on microblogs, crowd sourcing, and
103. medical records.

104.

Chemical IR Track

105. The Chemical IR track addresses challenges in building
106. large chemical testbeds to evaluate, in a realistic scenario,
107. the state of the art in chemical information retrieval and
108. extraction tools.
