  45. <td> <p><b>SPOTLIGHT ON: RETAILERS IN NEW YORK CITY</b></p>
  46. <p>Macy's, B. Altman's, Saks Fifth Avenue and Abraham & Straus
  47. are just some of the great department stores that have been located in
  48. New York City. Others like IKEA and Filene's Basement are relative
  49. newcomers. Retail stores, large and small, are an essential New York
  50. business. This article highlights some publications on department stores,
  51. shopping malls and the retail business.</p>
  52. <p><i>Bloomingdale's 100: Perspectives on a New York Tradition</i> celebrates
  53. the centennial of Bloomingdale's in 1972. The history of the store
  54. is presented along with photographs from various time periods and historical
  55. information about New York City over the years covered. Bloomingdale's
  56. was established in 1872 by two brothers of the same name and eventually
  57. expanded in terms of physical space, number of stores and merchandise
  58. offered.</p>
  59. <p><i>Retailing New York </i>is a report from the Manhattan Borough President's
  60. office published in June 1996. Surveys of both New York City residents
  61. and retailers were conducted. Findings and analysis are shown in the
  62. report. Case studies of seven shopping areas such as Arthur Avenue in
  63. the Bronx and Fulton Mall in Brooklyn are presented along with discussion
  64. of the typical users/shoppers, access to the stores, private and public
  65. investments, strengths and challenges. The retail economy in the city
  66. is also examined and recommendations for the future are offered.</p>
  67. <p><i>Great Merchants of Early New York: "The Ladies' Mile"</i> by
  68. Joseph Devorkin offers historical sketches of several New York retailers
  69. that opened for business on the famous "Ladies' Mile." This
  70. shopping area extended from 14th and the Union Square area, up Broadway
  71. to 23rd Street in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
  72. Many stores such as Lord & Taylor, Henri Bendel, F.A.O.Schwarz, and
  73. Bergdorf Goodman started here before eventual relocation or closure.
  74. Included are contemporary and historical photos and excerpts from original
  75. newspaper advertisements for the stores.</p>
  76. <p><i>IKEA Red Hook: Final Environmental Impact Statement</i> prepared by AKRF,
  77. Inc. and other consulting firms for the Department of City Planning is
  78. a study of conditions on the site of a proposed IKEA furniture department
  79. store. The report, required by law, as part of the land use process,
  80. discusses the socioeconomic factors, waterfront, environmental conditions
  81. and hazards and various other key elements. </p>
  82. <p>Consult the vertical files for articles and other materials on retail
  83. stores and shopping malls. Find out more about shops, merchants, the
  84. retail business and what they contribute to the city's social life
  85. and economy.
